GOD,SPIRITUALITY AND RELIGION ....(the real one)

This post as you might be knowing is a follow up to my previous post , yes yes, the one in which i could not come to the main point due to lack of space(avoidable or unavoidable!). At that time i was pretty amused to see what i had done (or rather what all i had NOT done) ,but later on it turned out to be a problem because this one post was not taking the form i wanted it to.....so that is what kept the writer in me stagnated for such a long time. But a million thanks to all those of you who supported me in a way by asking me through mails and chat to update it soon. That just made me realize that there are a few people looking forward to my future posts......for a first time blogger who started blogging just by chance , this is no less than a dream come true!!!!

And now, after that little acknowledgement , i'd like to get on with this post........with the hope that it doesn't disappoint you....

SPIRITUALITY and RELIGION
do these words sound the same to you? If they do , then , well , i beg to differ !!!
This is something that i have always maintained .....the stance that the two terms are different , way apart rather!! I am now going to make a little attempt to show to you my way of treating them as different. You can easily find out how the two terms are "literally" different .....there are quite a lot of good dictionaries available for that. But that is not what i intend to do. I intend to present my perspective in this context ,not that of Oxford's learner's or Free learner's dictionary , for that matter. So here i begin..................

I think spirituality is that inner sensation , that inner voice which convinces you to believe in the existence of some superior power .Atheists, please don't be rash enough to scroll down to the comments section at the bottom of this post to express your difference of opinion at this statement.(lol...just kidding...i am very very certain you won't .......PERHAPS! :P). I can just say one thing to counter you people's arguments that may arise .....that....this is what i have FELT! I say that i am spiritual but not religious not because i have done some serious meditation or that i have read a lot of scriptures ...infact i haven't , AT ALL. Sometimes , the mystical beauty around me makes me wonder , "something so so divine MUST be venting out from a source utterly sacrosanct "......and THAT'S where i am compelled to believe in the existence of an almighty power . Beauty here could be ,  a soulful piece of music that reaches my heart straightaway or a blissful scenery or the feeling of love and being loved.......just about anything that touches my soul.

Now , i do not say that this is all what makes one spiritual . As i said , this is so "in my case"....for somebody else it could be anything else ....maybe some form of art or maybe his own job and responsibilities (as they say , work is worship!) or still maybe RELIGION.

Yes , that's what i mean to say ....that religion is only ONE of the many paths that one may take to achieve that state of tranquility .You don't really have to be religious to be able to connect with god  , though at any time you may choose to be one.

It's not that i am against religion just because i myself am not religious. Apart from my serious dislike for all the superstitious practices that people indulge in(the tantriks, the sacrifices, the horoscopes , the stone overloaded fingers ...and what not!!) , its the fact that owing to people's dire misconceptions about religion and because of some people following it so stringently that they are ready to forget the basic trait of humanity  , that i have ,in very recent times ,developed a slight feeling of condemnation for the concept of religion .  I do not boycott any religion , nor do i favor any one of them but am definitely against the MISUSE of it . In the name of PROMOTING their own religion , people are crossing all limits of insensitivity and brutality , to say the least. We have created barriers amongst ourselves , malicious intentions have given birth to so much world cacophony .....i ask you , why do you have to PROMOTE your religion ?? It's your way of worshiping god , right?? why do you then want to enthrust it upon somebody else (this is with reference to people going to the extent of forcing others to convert by creating difficult situations.).....Nothing could be cheaper than trying to "ENDORSE" your 'god'......if it was so , the word 'god' would not have meant what it actually does.  Also ,who has given YOU the authority to categorize people as low or high , superior or inferior ??

So that's why i say what i say and i say that i say A LOTttt!!!!

I would like to emphasize that these are my own views and i am not trying to impose them . I also do not want to offend anybody , though if you feel you are , feel free to say so.

GOD-
Nothing very different to say as such but just that i believe in god , i do ....and my belief in the almighty stems from my spirituality . It is just the faith that yes, there IS really someone ...someone most powerful , the controller of all beings , the creator of all the magnificent beauty around us.

But one thing really disturbs me is that we human beings are already so selfish and we do not cease to be so even in front of the majesty.Like in times of distress we blame our god for our malaise . This whole attitude is actually very "loser-like" but then again , this is what most of us do , isn't it? Infact , on a second thought , i gather, this must have been how the very concept of god took birth . Since we people have the natural tendency to blame someone for anything wrong that may happen , someone like us must have started the notion of the existence of god . So ..... 'EUREKA' ,the world cried when it got a universal name that will take the blame for anything amiss.....'god' as we now all very well know.

Or worse , when things don't work out the way we want them to , we jump to a very ad hoc conclusion "there's no god at all" .

I think the above para will find consort in my ATHEIST and AGNOSTIC readers..........but i am not one of them . Infct , i am just being a little sarcastic here , though quite undoubtedly , it is true for most of us , which is very unfortunate. I would just say that IF you believe in god , then the least that you can do is be grateful to him for all things good and be optimistic about the difficulties that come up in your way .Life cannot be and SHOULD NOT be a cake-walk because if it becomes so easy , homo sapiens would start considering themselves the rulers of the world .Just think if the world is in such a bad state already; inspite of the presence of the so-called 'god fearing' people , it would have been in an impossibly scary situation had all of us begun to believe that there's no god , noone to PUNISH us.

So that is how i consider the existence of god "important" for the sake of humanity. And that is why i always TRY to thank god when i am blessed with some joy.....no matter how big or small......

The bottomline(quite literally!!) - LIVE AND LET LIVE !!

WAITING FOR YOUR FEEDBACK , WHETHER GOOD OR BAD ,FOR THIS REALLY LONG POST!!!!!!!!

The bottom line is a good one.... thats the basic correct thing that comes out of all this. Live and let live. The other beliefs you talked of vary from human to human and believing them or not believing them is nt enough to decide whether someone is a true human being. but "live and let live" is the basic principle of humanity.

i appreciate ur beliefs and the way in which u presented them, but - rational as i am - my agnostic frame of mind remains!

Sugandha December 30, 2009 at 10:08 AM

ya ..that is true....those are my own beliefs and they vary from person to person...it is almost impossible to change someone's mindframe ,particularly in this context. Spiritual and religious beliefs are one's own and impossible to change.
Creatively, this has been a really unsatisfying post as at some places i felt that things didn't turn out the way i wanted them to ....maybe they went a little overboard sometimes.......i plan to not take up such serious stuff atleast for a while...till something really appealing comes up! Thanks for your comment though!

nice post....

your concept is really nice...to believe in god without religion, but is it practical??

I mean most of the people (not me) believe "Religion is a way to realize god" and that's why they follow it, but to think of god as a superpower and believe in it without ever realizing what it is, doesn't sound great.

I would also like to ask that if there really is a god then don't u think the balance b/w good and evil should always be restored, but i don't feel that's happening.

sugandha...... a big wow.... to your ideas....we definitely have a similar approach towards things...just that you shape your ideas in a different manner....which is really fantastic....
a quote from my article.... "atheists” are nowhere to be seen except in an English dictionary……..because however rationalism a person may portray, whatever claims he may make about his disbelief….n supposed “atheism”, he is bound to acknowledge the supreme power atleast once in his life………….
:)

@MANSI - firstly , a BIG THANKS for that BOG WOW :) ....means a lot !!!
secondly , this line tht u quoted , it's AMAZING and i kinda agree with ...and if this quoted text from ur article reflects ur own ideologies about the subject , then i agree with you ..tht we do have a similar approach towards these thngs! Infact on a second thought , as i stress my lil brain to think over your statement ,to find out instances on the same, i realize tht u indeed made a gr8 stmnt!

This one is my favorite topic but for the personal matter. I completely agree with your thought of spirituality and religion.

Last lines were the essense of your blog. LIVE and LET LIVE...Everyone has their own way of belief and believing. Faith is the emotion for me and it could be for anyone.

Sugandha May 31, 2010 at 10:37 PM

@Appu- thanks again.,but you know what, this is one post that took so much time and thought but the end result, still din live up to my expectations and i had quite expected that. This is so since i find it hard to exactly express my views on spiritualism, those on religion and mythology are quite clear...me again em.

Infact i sometimes doubt my own views, how to truely word it, i really dunno. Maybe or maybe surely, i'll dedicate another post to this topic some time in the future.
Anyway, thanks :)

Would be waiting for that post and would like to discuss in detail with you. For the matter I would like to tell you that at some points your thinking matches with me on this topic.

And thats not a problem dear..I can read non-sense posts too as everything in the world make sense to me. :-)

Tanay June 13, 2010 at 11:59 AM

@Harsh: Spokes person? What the hell do you mean by that?

Sugandha June 13, 2010 at 12:27 PM

@Tanay: :D :P ;) :) I think he meant 'speaker'. :)

The word "spirituality" is used in many different ways, mostly to mean the same as religion. Some people think it's got to do with meditation. Some think it's plain hogwash!

You are right insofar as saying it's not the same as religion. Or even meditation hasn't anything to with spirituality. But then you talk about God. Well, I already read your post in which you have talked about turning towards Atheism, and I would say you are going in the right direction!

I simply equate spirituality with truth-seeking. If you like you can read my detailed view on my blog post titled Understanding spirituality in a few words.

Also this article on one of my favorite blogs explains spirituality pretty nicely.

See if you can agree with those. :)
